Who knows Marit best?

Bracelets galore for the Swiftie!
The Taylor Swift themed tents and mattresses for the birthday party set up in the living room

We had a "In my double digit birthday era" Taylor Swift themed sleepover party over the weekend with a few friends and her cousins. We played lots of Taylor Swift trivia games, made bracelets, did face masks, ate cake and watched the Grinch. Just as it was time for bed, we watched the beginning of Taylor Swift's last Eras tour live from Vancouver, BC. She was very sad when we had to turn if off for lights out at 10:30PM. Marit had her microphone to sing and dance along and knew almost every word. Before every Taylor Swift, show she completes her Mastermind checklist to guess which outfits Taylor is going to wear for each era and which bonus songs are going to be played. It's amazing to see how inspiring Taylor is on an entire generation of young girls and how she brings people together and builds community through her shows. Marit is definitely a little Swiftie (I am not) but it's been a fun journey to go on and watch her grow. Sadly we never made it to a show but we'll have to go someday.

This year, Marit is deciding more and more what she likes and dislikes:

She likes ballet. She will be a blueberry picker in the upcoming Minnesota Ballet's "Nutcracker, a Duluth tale" at the DECC. She is an understudy for caroler (her role for the last two years) and gingerbread and has enjoyed learning all the different routines.

She dislikes playing soccer. She played traveling soccer this summer and mom was the assistant coach but decided it's not her jam and is taking a break "for a few years," she said.

She likes dance. She started jazz and tap classes at Stacey's studio this fall and wants to do competition dance next year.

She dislikes practicing piano and cello. She started cello this summer after "falling in love with the sound" but is currently taking a break because she doesn't like to practice.

She likes to camp and be outdoors but hates hiking. She complained nearly every step we took on our national park road trip this summer. She likes camping and made me camp under the northern lights this summer but quit cub scouts this year because she doesn't like doing the "boring stuff like badges".

She's smart and strong in math and art. Her reading is improving with phonics help. She was in kindergarten during COVID and her class (and the class ahead of her) has really struggled with reading due to missing some basic phonics. She'd probably quit school if we let her. She's a great party planner and is very savvy with Canva and google slides. She'd probably become a full time Swiftie but alas she's only in 4th grade and needs to learn to spell correctly, read and write.
