Marit turns 6
A little late but better late than never...
Birthdays are important milestones. They help us take a step back from the regular routine and reflect on another year of life. We recall the birth of our children and all the changes that have happened over the years. Today is Marit's 6th birthday! Six years ago today, Seth and I drove to the Seattle airport to pick up my parents. We stopped for coffee and donuts (I couldn't have any since I was NPO) and then we checked in to Labor and Delivery at Swedish Medical Center. After we took a few selfies of the bump, the nurse started an IV, and I walked into the C-section suite around noon. Marit was breech and since I had a C-section before, we planned to have a scheduled section just after my MPH finals. Less than an hour later, Marit Marjorie was born. We were so thrilled to have a healthy baby girl just in time for Christmas (read old blog post here). She was our early Christmas present.
Fast forward 6 years and here we are in the midst of a global COVID-19 pandemic and Marit has grown into quite an adventurous kid. She is constantly trying to keep up with her big brother, Theo. She learned to ride a bike at age 3, downhill ski at age 4, and play piano at age 5. She got roller blades this year and tried out her new ice skates for her birthday at the cabin (she helped me pick them out). Sadly, she started off the year with a broken leg skiing on New Year's Day at Chester Bowl and then she was sledding and had a minor crash into a fence and broke her right arm just before Thanksgiving.
Seth says he remembers carrying her around in her full leg cast and having to carry her wheelchair around everywhere last winter. He remembers how tough she was and mentally was over her injury and as soon as her cast was off was asking if we'd go back to Big Sky so she could ski and go in the big hot tub. He also recalls that she refuses to wake up in the morning for school, like a teenager. But once she's up, she does a great job and is doing a wonderful job reading Dr. Seuss and other early reader books. She is always the comedian, always laughing and always sneaking into our king bed and snuggles with Mommy. Starting in March, 2020 became the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Marit had just got her cast off and was back at preschool 5 days a week (Hartley Nature Center Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Hidden Valley Tuesday and Thursdays) and then everything closed down. She played outside with the next door neighbor, Natalie, nearly everyday.
When asked what he likes about his sister, Theo says, "She is very annoying." When pressed, he says that sometimes she is helpful, nice, kind, loyal, says please and thank you, doesn't be mean, is thoughtful, imaginative, friendly, and happy (but mostly to Mommy and not him). He says the nicest thing Marit has done for him is made him waffles. His favorite game to play with Marit is chase her around or play Monopoly. She likes to play "Just Dance" or do the jump rope contest or play "Yoshi Craft World" on the Nintendo Switch. She likes watching Ninjago, Legends of Korra, and Avatar. Her favorite character is Nea from Ninjago. Marit also likes watching princess shows (Rapunzel is her favorite), Descendants, and Ladybug girl. She likes to play babies but her brother thinks that's boring. For her birthday she wanted "American Girl Dolls," which her brother says are "super creepy."
