Reflection
This is Papa checking in with my reflections after my vacation in Lima. In no particular order:
- Theo's communication skills took a step back in Peru. He is using less English and signing has fallen by the wayside. While it was slightly disappointing to see this as I can't wait to start talking with, and not to, Theo, it was alleviated by the realization he gained another skill - the ability to understand Spanish! And this isn't meant to be a "my kid is the smartest kid in the world" type thing, but more of an astounding realization of the nimbleness and absorption powers of a young brain. When asked, "dame un besos" (give me a kiss) he duly responded. In another situation I found stunned when Katie basically told him in Spanish that it was time to go and we were leaving, he promptly grabbed his toy cars and headed to the front door!
- The kid is a climber. He will attack any piece of playground equipment with reckless abandon. He will slip now and then, but I was utterly surprised to watch him, on his own, climb up to the top of a 15 foot circular slide and go down it on his own. He definitely takes after his mom and dad, and I can't wait to take him hiking with him this summer.
- We think that Theo is a lefty. It seems to be his dominant hand currently, but he still does use his right. He is still in the ambidextrous period, so we many not know for a little while longer.
- My wife is a saint. Her patience with Theo is something I admire and try to emulate. Also, she is putting in long days (and unfortunately sometimes nights) with Theo, which I know are not very easy - and I greatly appreciate all her hard work being a single mom these past couple months.
