Welcome to the world baby Theo!
Our little baby, Theodore James, was born at Swedish Hospital in
Seattle last week. He was born early because mom developed some
preeclampsia which necessitated his sooner-than-expected delivery. Boy
was he a peanut - weighing in at 5 lbs. 9 oz.! He had to spend a few
days in the Infant Special Care Unit because he had low blood sugar and
needed IV fluids and frequent blood sugar monitoring. He was such a
champ and tolerated the heel sticks without a peep and didn't mind the
continuous heart rate and oxygen saturation monitoring either. We were
lucky that he had a full time nurse watching him so we could get some
sleep those first nights but then we quickly became accustomed to his
rigorous schedule of feeding every three hours - 3, 6, 9, and 12 around
the clock to maintain his blood sugars above a certain level. After four
long days in the hospital, we were discharged home. Since coming home,
I'd say this was the longest week of my life as it was full of new
adventures and not a lot of continuous sleep.
We were very fortunate to have my mom re-route her road trip and get dropped off in Las Vegas and fly here to help us out for the week. Grandma was a great help and loved to hold her new grand baby. Theo loves his new bath tub, the Puj, which conveniently fits in our kitchen sink. He can only see 6-12 inches so he likes our bright orange and red shirts but hasn't taken to any toys or books. He loves to be swaddled and I likes when I sing to him and rock him to sleep after feeding. "Rock-a-bye baby," "You Are My Sunshine" and "Wild Irish Rose" are his favorites and are nice because I can sing to old wind-up music boxes I got when I was little.
On Friday, his pediatrician gave him two thumbs up to transition to "on-demand" feeding because he was up to 5 lbs, 13 oz. It has been a challenge as he likes to sleep for 4-5 hours during the day and then get up every 2 hours at night. Therefore, we have decided to nickname him, "El Jefecito," or little boss in Spanish since he now dictates our life. Today, despite my best efforts to cover him was able to pee on me not once but twice. Oh parenthood, it's amazing!
Thanks for all your love and support and check back often to see this little peanut grow.
Love,
Katie and Seth
Leaving for the hospital with my bags packed and boppy in hand. 36 weeks.
Seth and I in the operating room getting ready for my C-section at 2am.
Fifteen minutes later... Theodore arrives screaming! He is quickly quieted when they place him on my chest while they suture me up and then swaddle him to stay warm.
Proud papa!
I made Seth "Baby Daddy #1" scrubs to wear at the hospital. They were a hit by all the nurses.
Our little peanut!

Adorable! He is so tiny - these pix are great. And Katie, you look amazing 15 minutes after having a C-section :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations
Lovely pictures of you and the family. It was so wonderful to be with your new family last week. We are blessed to have Theo. I miss him already. Annie and I will look forward to our trip to see all of you. Hope this week goes well for you. Love, Madre
ReplyDeleteYou guys are such a beautiful family! Sounds like a rocky first few weeks, so glad everyone is happy and healthy. Can't wait to see you guys in a few weeks!
ReplyDeleteI love the pics, especially the ones with great big Seth and itsy bitsy Theo! In the hospital pics Theo looks like a little Mamuska doll. Oh, he IS a little doll, but so was his mother at that age (and father I assume). But then again, I AM a little biased. I am eagerly looking forward to my upcoming best birthday present ever (sorry Hobey Cat)- seeing and holding my new grandson for the very first time. Love to all.

Congrats! I suddenly feel somewhat responsible for the lives of two little people. Theo, and Lauren's brother and sister-in-law recently adopted a baby girl, Lydia. I hope we can come meet Theo some time. Maybe once this crazy schooling of mine ends some time next summer/fall. Love you guys and happy adventures!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I also like Seth's bike shirt (I happen to have the same one). I hope that means we both try to bike to work and what not?
