Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) summer 2024 trip

We had a perfect week in the BWCA. Blue skies every day, highs in the upper 70s, lows in the 50s. No rain. Minimal bugs. We had a fantastic site. Nice day trips and picnic lunches. Caught some fish. Played games and roasted s'mores. Other than the full moon putting a damper on the night sky and northern lights, it was basically a 5 stay week! We made some haiku's the describe the trip, enjoy!

BWCAW Haikus

Entry one-four, go!

Two canoes paddle by turtles,

down winding river.

 

Portages we go,

Hauling packs, paddles and poles.

Makes voyageurs strong!


Theo and Lauren carried

their canoes 200 rods.

They voyageurs now.


What's a perfect site?

Great views, tent pads, jumping rock.

We hit the jackpot!


Misty morning, coffee

Beavers swim by in the bay,

Reading on the rock.


Paddle to day hike

Sioux Hustler trail to Devil's 

"Where is your permit?"


The greatest shower

is not a shower at home

but in a waterfall.


Upper, Lower Pauness lakes,

Little Indian Sioux River

Heritage, Shell, and Little.


Walleyes, perch, and bass

Frogs and toads, and fisher, too.

Swans, loons, hummingbird.


We caught many fish

with green worms and night crawlers.

Fake lures, not so much.


Shades of blue and green,

Toads and frogs and eagles flew,

Swans honk, loons call, too.


Lauren taught Theo

How to play new game, cribbage.

He skunked her, twice. 


Marit won game of Qwix.

Organized toad and frog hunt

And had the best cheers.


Reason fifty-three

Grandma JoJo won't come with,

"Look what I found, Mom!"

Fishing, swimming, fun

Camping, frogging, climbing, fun

Our one trip this summer was a long weekend going downtown - to Chi-town. A quick 1 hour direct flight from Duluth makes it an easy get-a-way with lots of great restaurants and cultural opportunities for the big and little kids. Luck for me, our Thursday night flight was delayed two-hours so that I finished reading all my echocardiograms and cleaned out my Epic in basket with just enough time to spare to get home, change clothes, finish packing and leave our house exactly 1 hour prior to flight departure and still drive to the airport, park, check a bag, get through security, and buy some candy before the plane started boarding! Gotta love the DLH international airport! "Long" security lines at the airport < 1 hour prior to flight

40 questions for my 40th birthday

The big 4-0! This month, I turn 40 and I thought I'd interview myself as a special birthday post. While it does mean more wrinkles, the silver lining of turning 40 is that I now move into a new “Masters” age group (40-44 years) for running, triathlons, and swimming races! It also means I should probably go to the doctor as I’m due for my annual preventative exams, such as mammography, cholesterol and diabetes screening, and at 45 years, a colonoscopy, too. Where are you now? Sitting in my office on a desktop computer in our home in Duluth, MN. What is the date? December 3, 2023 What is the weather like? Chilly, snow flurries. Highs in the mid 30s, lows in the teens. No snow on the ground yet.   Why do you write?  I write to share with my close friends and family what our family is up to and how I'm feeling. Sadly, I haven't written nearly as much as I used to before we moved back "home" to Minnesota in 2017. I haven't feel the urgent need to keep our family up

THEO is 12!

THEO! Our baby boy is 12. From 5 lbs, 9 oz and 18 inches to over 90 lbs. and 5' 4", he's not such a little peanut anymore. He enjoys playing lots of sports - soccer, basketball, volleyball, disc golf, mountain biking, and gaga ball in gym. He loves swimming, tubing and knee boarding at the cabin. In the winter he loves sledding at Holy Rosary and skiing at Spirit Mountain. He's in his 6th year of piano with Ms. Roberta and wants to do the drums in middle school next year. His dream day is to play Fortnite all day and night with his friends. He's kind, competitive, and funny.
